Install Java before installing Eclipse.

You may want to print these instructions before proceeding, so that you can refer to them while downloading and installing Eclipse. Or, just keep this document in your browser. You should read each step completely before performing the action that it describes. This document shows downloading and installing Eclipse on Windows 7 in Spring 2012..

Eclipse: Version 4.3 (Kepler)

The Eclipse download requires about 182 MB of disk space; keep it on your machine, in case you need to re-install Eclipse. When installed, Eclipse requires about an additional 220 MB of disk space.

Downloading

  1. Click Eclipse.

    You following page will appear in your browser. In this handout we will download Eclipse Classic 4.3 for Windows 32 Bit; if your computer uses Windows, continue below; otherwise look above the column of 'green arrows' for the label Eclipse Kepler (4.3) Packages for and in the pull-down list to its right, choose either Mac OS X (Cocoa) or Linux and then continue below.

  2. Click the 32 Bit Operating System for your machine (even if you know your Operating System is 64 Bits and even if you downloaded the 64 Bit version of Python), under the heading Eclipse Classic 4.3 (182 MB) (the second icon from the top).

    You will see the following page (don't worry about the name of the institution to the right of the big downward pointing arrow).

  3. Click the big downward pointing arrow underneath the Download eclipse-SDK-4.3-win32.zip from: The site named here, in purple to the right of the arrow: [United States] Georgia Tech Software Library (http) is the random one chosen by the download page this time.

    This file should start downloading in your standard download folder. This file is about 182 Mb so it might take a while to download fully if you are on a slow internet connection (it took me about 3 minutes over a cable modem). Don't worry about the exact time as long as the download continues to make steady progress.

    The file should appear as

    Terminate the window browsing the Eclipse download.

  4. Move this file to a more permanent location, so that you can install Eclipse (and reinstall it later, if necessary).
  5. Start the Installing instructions directly below.

Installing (for Java)

Java should be installed before installing Eclipse
  1. Unzip eclipse-SDK-4.3-win32.zip, the file that you just downloaded and moved.
    On my machine (running Windows 7), I can
    • Right-click the file.
    • Hover over the IZArc command from the menu of options.
    • Click Extract Here

    If you do not have IZArc or an equivalent unzipping program, here is the web site to download a free copy of IZarc.

    Unzipping this file creates a folder named eclipse. You can leave this folder here or move it elsewhere on your hard disk. I recommend putting the downloaded file and resulting folder in the C:Program Files directory.

  2. Create a shortcut on your desktop to the eclipse.exe file in this eclipse folder:
    On most Windows machines, you can
    • Right-press the file eclipse.exe
    • Drag it to the desktop.
    • Release the right button.
    • Click Create shortcut here

    Now you are ready to perform a one-time only setup of Eclipse on your machine.

  3. Double-click the shortcut to Eclipse that you just created above.

    The following splash screen will appear

    and then a Workspace Launcher pop-up window will appear.

    In the Workspace text box, your login name should appear between C:Users and workspace, instead of Administrator.

    Leave unchecked the Use this as the default and do not ask again box. Although you will use this same workspace for the entire quarter (checking projects in and out of it), it is best to see this Workspace Launcher pop-up window each time you start Eclipse, to remind you where your workspace is located.

  4. Click OK.

    Progress bars will appear as Eclipse loads.

    Eventually the Eclipse workbench will appear with a Welcome tab covering it.

  5. Terminate (click X on) the Welcome tab.

    You will not see the Welcome tab when you start Eclipse after this first time.

  6. Locate the workspace folder created in step 3 (see C:Usersyournameworkspace).

    Download (right-click and Save link as) IntroLib: Course Library Jar... into the same folder that you are using as your workspace (or move this file into the workspace folder after downloading it elsewhere).

  7. Click Window (to the left of Help on the far right of the line below this window's blue title Java - Eclipse SDK) and then click Preferences in its pull-down menu, as shown below.
  8. Disclose Java by clicking the + in front of Java or double-clicking Java (after the +); the + changes to a -.
    Disclose Installed JREs similarly.
    The Preferences pop-up window should appear as follows (although the path under Location might be different on your machine).
  9. Under the Name column, double-click the icon.

    The Edit JRE pop-up window will appear.

  10. Click Add External Jars....
  11. In the Jar Selection window, navigate to your workspace folder, and double-click the file introlib.jar.
  12. Scroll down the JRE system libraries pane and observe the introlib.jar file now at the bottom.
  13. In the Edit JRE window, click Finish.
  14. In the Installed JREs window, click OK.
  15. Terminate (click X on) the Eclipse window.
Eclipse is now installed for Java.

Installing Your OEPE Application

OEPE is easily installed using any of the following options:

  • Oracle Installer - Installs OEPE, Oracle ADF, Coherence, and Oracle WebLogic Server. For more information, see 'Using the Oracle Installer'.

  • Eclipse Update Manager - Use a local (OEPE plugins zip archive) or a remote (Oracle Technology Network site) repository. For more information, see 'Installing with Eclipse Update Manager'.

  • All-in-one-kit - Download and unzip the kit which includes Eclipse along with the OEPE plugins. For more information, see 'Installing with the Standalone Kit'.

  • Eclipse Marketplace - Install from an existing installation of Eclipse. For more information, see 'Installing with Eclipse Marketplace'.

System Requirements

The following system requirements apply for this release:

  • Mac OS Leopard

  • Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 - 32/64 bit

  • Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 - 32/64bit

  • Recommend 2GB memory for IDE and an additional 2GB if running server locally


Note:

WebLogic Server defaults to a large heap, which may be inappropriate for development. Changing the server start script can remedy the server memory usage.

Using the Oracle Installer

OEPE 12.1.2.4 with Oracle WebLogic Server 12c Release 1 (12.1.2): This installer can be used to install Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (OEPE) 12.1.2.4, Oracle WebLogic Server 12c (12.1.2), and Coherence 12.1.2, and Oracle ADF 12.1.2 on your system.

You can download Oracle Installer from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) web site: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/eclipse/downloads/index.html.

Oracle Installer Options

Oracle Installer is available in three platform-specific options, including Sun Java JDK 6.0 Update 29, and Oracle JRockit Update 20 SDK. JDK is not required for these installers.

  • Windows Installers:

    • containing Oracle WebLogic Server 12c (12.1.2): oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-win32.exe

    • containing Oracle WebLogic Server 12c (12.1.2): oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-win64.exe

  • Linux Installers:

    • containing Oracle WebLogic Server 12c (12.1.2): oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-linux32.bin

    • containing Oracle WebLogic Server 12c (12.1.2): oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-linux64.bin

  • Mac OS X Installer:

Note:

Throughout this document, <timestamp> refers to an internally used number in the installer name. For example, the Windows installer could be named: oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.201405101647-12.1.2-win32.exe

How to Launch the Installer

Launching the installer depends on which platform you are using:

  • To launch the Windows installer and install WebLogic Server 12c Release 1 (12.1.2) along with OEPE 12.1.2.4, double-click:

    oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-win32.exe

  • To launch the Linux installer (for the Weblogic Server 12c (12.1.2) installer), follow these steps:

    1. Ensure that the Linux installer file is executable by running the chmod command:

      chmod +x oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-linux32.bin

    2. Execute the file:

      ./oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-linux32.bin

  • To launch the Mac OS X installer (for the Weblogic Server 12c (12.1.2) installer), enter:

    java -jar oepe-kepler-installer-12.1.2.4.<timestamp>-12.1.2-macosx-cocoa-x86_64.jar

Understanding the Install Steps

The installer walks you through all of the parameters available for your OEPE application.

  1. Welcome

    Click Next to begin the installation process.

  2. Installation Location

    You can create a new Oracle Home directory, or select one from a list of existing Oracle Home directories. If you choose an existing Oracle Home directory, you can click View to display the Feature Sets currently installed in this directory. If you choose a directory that already has OEPE and Oracle WebLogic Server components installed on it, you are taken directly to the Installation Summary page.

    If you choose to create a new Oracle Home directory, click Browse to select the Oracle Home installation directory

    Click Next to review the Installation Summary.


    Notes:

    • If you choose to use an existing Oracle Home directory for the installation, you must select one that was created for this release of Oracle Fusion Middleware. The installer will reject the home directory if it contains installed components from a previous release.

    • For the remainder of this document, ORACLE_HOME has been used to represent the Oracle Home directory that you have chosen. For example, if you selected C:Oracle as your Oracle Home directory, then ORACLE_HOME would refer to C:Oracle.


  3. Installation Summary

    The Installation Summary page displays the Installation Location for Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, the Disk Space required for the installation, and the Feature Set to install. To change the installation location, click Back.

    To proceed with the installation, click Install.

  4. Installation Progress

    Displays the progress of the installation.

  5. Installation status

    Displays the progress of the installation.

  6. Installation Complete

    To view information about which products and components were installed, review the Installation Complete page. Here you can also see the installation Log File Location to view more detailed information about the installation process.

    Click Done to end the installation process.


    Note:

    Should the installation process be interrupted prior to completion, the result is likely an incomplete and non-functional partial installation. If this occurs, the recommended approach is to attempt to uninstall the previous installation. If that is successful, you can re-install normally, otherwise you should re-install into a new Oracle Home.


Installing with Eclipse Update Manager

You can use Eclipse Update Manager for Eclipse 3.8 Juno, Eclipse 4.2 Juno, and Eclipse 4.3 Kepler to install OEPE using two ways:

  • Using the OEPE plugins zip file as a local repository.

  • Using the remote repository hosted on Oracle Technology Network

How to Install Using a Local Repository Archive

Install from a local repository on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

To install OEPE using the repository archive:

  1. From the OTN web site: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/eclipse/downloads/index.html, download the archive repository file appropriate for your operating system and Eclipse version.

  2. From the Eclipse main menu, select Help > Install New Software.

  3. Click Add to add a new update site.

  4. In the Add Repository dialog, click Archive.

  5. In the Repository Archive dialog, navigate to the OEPE plugins zip file and select it.

  6. In the software list, select Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, verify that all of the subcomponents are selected, and then click Next.

  7. Confirm information presented on the Install Details page, and then click Next.

  8. Review licenses on the Review Licenses page and click Finish.

How to Install Using the remote repository

Use the Install New Software feature from the remote repository.

To install using the remote repository:

  1. From the Eclipse main menu, select Help > Install New Software.

  2. Click Add to add a new update site.

  3. In the Add Repository dialog, enter the location:

    • For Juno, use http://download.oracle.com/otn_software/oepe/juno.

    • For Kepler, use http://download.oracle.com/otn_software/oepe/kepler

    Then click OK.

    Note: This URL works only from within Eclipse, and will not work if accessed through a browser.

  4. In the software list, select Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, verify that all of the subcomponents are selected, and then click Next.

  5. Confirm information presented on the Install Details, and then click Next.

  6. Review licenses on the Review Licenses page and click Finish.

Installing with the Standalone Kit

The standalone installation kit is a zip archive that contains Eclipse with the OEPE plugins already loaded.

To install using the standalone installation kit:

  1. From the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) web site: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/eclipse/downloads/index.html, download the all-in-one archive file appropriate for your operating system and Eclipse version.

  2. Extract the archive file to a folder of your choice.

Installing with Eclipse Marketplace

Svn Plugin For Eclipse Kepler 64 Bit

If you already have an installation of Eclipse, you can install OEPE using Eclipse Marketplace.

To install using Eclipse Marketplace:

  1. In Eclipse, choose Help > Eclipse Marketplace.

  2. In the Eclipse Marketplace dialog, enter Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse in Find. The available versions of OEPE are displayed.

  3. Choose the appropriate version of OEPE for the version of Eclipse you are using. For example, if you are using Eclipse Kepler, choose Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse Kepler. Click Install.

  4. On the next page, the features that will be installed are listed. Click Confirm.

  5. On the Review Licenses page, accept the terms of the license agreements and click Finish.

    The software is installed. You can choose to run the installation in the background by clicking Run in Background.
